Humulene carries a subtle earthy, woody aroma and is found naturally occurring in cloves, basil, sage, ginseng, hops, and cannabis sativa. Humulene is one of the predominant terpenes in Humulus Lupus, or the female flower of the hop plant, found common in hops and also how it gets its name. This flower has been a friend to beer brewers around the world , depending on the style of beer, hops can add balance to the finished product through bitterness, flavor, and aroma and at no surprise adds those qualities to cannabis.
Humelene, like caryophyllene, is a sesquiterpene made of three isoprene units, but it does not contain a cyclobutane ring. It is also commonly known as a-humulene or a-caryophyllene, possessing a different isomer with distinct properties related to that of B-caryophyllene. Like most other cannabinoids and terpenes, humulene has powerful anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and also displays anti-cancer properties. Another characteristic making it unique, like THCv, humulene acts as an appetite suppressant, making it promising for weight loss treatments

Summary of Case Studies Done On Humulene
- A 2006 study on the essential oil of balsam fir trees, found that humulene was one of the compounds in the oil which had anti-bacterial properties and fought infections. More research is needed to be done on the anti-bacterial properties of humulene.
- In this 2007 study it was found that humulene's anti-inflammatory properties were comparable to that of dexamethasone, a steroidal anti-inflammatory. A 2008 study from Brazil found that humulene possessed both topical and systemic anti-inflammatory properties, with also finding it to be an antinociceptive or possessing analgesic properties. Taking a closer look into the anti-inflammatory properties, this 2009 study found them to be quite notable and present when taken either orally or by aerosol. Looking at these studies as a whole, it seems humulene is to be a powerful anti-inflammatory in all forms tested, whether oral or topical.
- In this 2003 study, it was found that humulene had the ability to produce Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) , which suggests it may have anti-cancer properties. Both ROS maximizing and ROS minimizing approaches have been developed and have various roles in cancer. While at some levels they contribute to the death of cancer cells through apoptosis, they can also increase the growth rate of tumors at other levels. A demonstration of the commonly called "entourage effect" in this 2007 study showed that B-caryophyllene potentiates the anti-cancer effects of humulene.
